DISCOVERY Community Partnerships

- Inspiring our Explorers to become agents of change within their own community

Hands-on, meaningful service opportunities for students, parents and staff are available through structured partnerships and collaborations within the Arlington community.

Scroll down for a list of current (2021-22) service opportunities offered through Discovery Elementary. More will be added as the school year progresses.

Discovery AFAC Food Bus

During a typical school year, Discovery students donate over 2,800 pounds of unwanted, unopened lunch items to AFAC (Arlington Food Assistance Program) through the AFAC School Bus Program. This popular program is back for the 2021-2022 school year!

Explorers can place unopened, uneaten food items from lunch in designated bins (teachers and staff will show students where these are located). At the end of each week, a volunteer will pick up the food from Discovery and deliver it to AFAC.

Parents can sign up to drive the “food bus” (your car, filled with the AFAC donations) here. This is a great family service project! See the link for more information.

If you or someone you know needs food assistance, please reach out to AFAC, 703.845.8486 afac.org

Support Barcroft's Weekend Bags Program

The Weekend Bags Program provides a weekend's worth of groceries for Barcroft students to take home after school on Friday.

Last year, Discovery families helped provide the food for the program.

This year, Discovery families can help in two ways:

  • Purchase food for the program through their Amazon wishlist
  • Pack bags at Barcroft ES twice a month, on a Monday and a Wednesday morning (you can sign up for either or both days). You can see the dates and times for September here. Masks are required and there will be enough space for social distancing. Windows will be open and there is an air filtration system in the room.
