Help us Have a Great Year: Participate in our No Frills Fundraiser

A new school year is upon us, and although there are a lot of differences, two things remain the same: the extreme dedication of our teachers and administrators to provide our children with the best possible education, and our Discovery families desire to provide as much support as possible to help them accomplish their goal.

This year requires the PTA to be creative and adaptable in how it provides support and experiences to students, teachers, and families.  We’re asking for your help to donate to our school fund, the “No Frills Fundraiser”, so we can have the flexibility to think outside of the box and still provide a “Discovery community” feel to our staff and families. Discovery Food Bus Program

This hands on, meaningful service project for youth begins Monday, September 21!

The Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) is in critical need of food donations and the Discovery community can help! Our challenge is to donate 3,000 pounds of food this year.

This is how the Food Bus Program will work: 2 AFAC food donation bins will be located outside of Discovery’s main entrance. Families are encouraged to donate as much and as often as you are able. Volunteers will sign up to pack and deliver the food to AFAC at the end of each week (Friday or Saturday).

To boost enthusiasm, we will have each grade take the lead for a particular month, starting in October. But anyone can donate at any time, and you can start on Monday, September 21! The schedule for lead grades will be: October (5th), November (4th), January (3rd), February (2nd), March (1st), April (K), May (Pre-K). More on this, current AFAC needs, and other ways you can help can be found on our website.

 Reflections Art Contest

Did you know that the arts can have a profound impact on the social-emotional learning and health of our students? We encourage all Explorers to participate in Discovery's 2020-2021 virtual Reflections program by creating original works of art in response to the student-selected theme: I Matter Because...

Baroody Camps is Here to Help

The Discovery Elementary School PTA is partnering with Baroody Camps to offer fun virtual or in-person enrichment opportunities! Baroody has a variety of flexible options to meet your family's needs including virtual or small group enrichment programs, learning groups, tutoring, and small group day camps.

The full description of programs and links to register are online. Registration for virtual enrichment programs for the fall is still open! Scholarship opportunities are available for those who qualify.

Project Headphones

Virtual School has been a tough transition for all of us. After talking to APS staff, teachers, and parents, it has become apparent that headphones are an essential item to make this experience successful for all APS families. However, headphones are by far the most expensive item on supply lists spanning all grades. Project Headphone’s mission is to ensure that all APS students have access to this essential item in the fall. Check out our fundraising page and please consider donating.

Discovery Girl Scout Troops

Now more than ever, families are relying on Girl Scouts to connect with each other and our community! Troops for the 2020-21 school year are now starting to form for Kindergartners as well as those in other grades who may be interested in joining existing troops. We will hold a virtual information meeting on Tuesday, September 22nd at 7 PM to learn about scouting and to form troops. Please submit your interest and RSVP here to receive a link to the virtual meeting: https://bit.ly/GirlScouts60-6. Please attend if your daughter is interested in joining Girl Scouts at Discovery!
