Bingo Night is Tonight!

Looking for something fun to do tonight

Join us in the dining commons from 6-7:30 pm for an evening of BINGO fun with special guest callers Ms Del Conte and Ms DiGuido! Siblings are welcome. Light snacks will be provided, pizza will be available for purchase.

This is not a drop-off event.

National PTA Reflections Contest - Last Chance

We are only 4 days away from The National PTA Reflections Contest entry deadline, so let’s continue to encourage our Explorer(s) to express themselves in one (or all) of the following categories: visual arts, writing, video, dance, photo, and musical pieces.

The student entry form and instructions on how to upload can be found HERE. All submissions are due Monday, November 13th!

Student Pictures are now available online!

If you haven't ordered your student's picture yet, it’s not too late! Please visit: //vosphoto.com/uc

Please use your student ID when prompted for the online code. For questions regarding school pictures please email: underclass@vosphoto.com.

Make up photos will be taken Friday, December 8th!

Donate Your Extra Halloween Candy by 11/13

Monday, November 13th is your last chance to offload all that extra Halloween candy that is just laying around the house, temping you. Stop by the school’s front atrium and gently toss your leftover candy into our Discovery Candy Monster’s mouths.

All the candy we collect will be donated to Bridges to Independence - an Arlington organization dedicated to leading individuals and families out of homelessness and into stable, independent futures. Please remember not to send in any candy with nuts!

Next PTA Meeting is Nov 14th

Join us Tuesday, November 14th, as we host our November PTA Meeting in the Dining Commons, starting at 7:00 pm. Our guest speaker for the evening will be Discovery’s own Mr Dickens, talking about Digital Citizenship Education.

Our November meeting agenda can be found here: https://discoverypta.membershiptoolkit.com/PTA_Meetings

This meeting will also be simulcast on Zoom (link will be released on the PTA website prior to the meeting).

Gift Card Collection for Families in Need

Starting Thursday, November 16th, the PTA is continuing its tradition of collecting gift cards for Discovery families in need. Target, Walmart, Amazon, and any local grocery store gift cards in amounts of $25 or $50 are much appreciated. Please help us support our Discovery community!

Gift cards can be dropped off at the collection box in the front office or
you can order a gift card online and have it sent to the Discovery PTA at
5241 North 36th Street, Arlington, VA, 22207. Thank you in advance for your generosity!

World Heritage Dinner Celebration

Capping off what we anticipate being an exciting in-school World Heritage Week (November 13th-17th), our World Heritage Dinner Celebration will take place on Friday evening, November 17th, from 6:00 - 7:30 pm, in the dining commons.

This year we are asking for families to sign up to bring food, share an activity, or share a performance. Please sign up using this link

We look forward to seeing you there and celebrating a host of cultures within our Discovery community!

Order Books for Author Visit

We are excited to welcome author, Naaz Khan, to Discovery on Friday, December 1st, for grades PreK to 3rd.

In the meantime, her delightful debut picture book, ‘Room for Everyone’ is available to order until Monday, November 20th. To order, click on this link. When ordering, in the notes section at checkout please put your child’s name, teacher, and Discovery ES.

Naaz Khan is an educator, writer, and lifelong learner with a background in refugee education and curriculum development.

Spirit Day: Scrabble Letter

A Discovery favorite! Explorers are encouraged to dress as a SCRABBLE letter for Sprit Day on Tuesday, November 21st.

This could be as simple as masking tape applied to your Explorer’s shirt in the shape of a letter…or, if you and your Explorer are feeling extra motivated, attach one on the front and one on the back!

The best part of this day is seeing all the W-O-R-D-S our Explorers are able to form in their classrooms, or throughout the day with their friends.

Ongoing Opportunities
Annual Coat Drive

Our Annual Winter Coat Drive kicked off this week!

This year’s recipient is The Clothesline for Arlington Kids (Clothesline is Arlington’s first free clothing store dedicated to school-aged children).

Our colorful Coat Drive collection boxes will be present in the front atrium of the school, as well as at the Extended Day back entrance until Friday, December 1st.

In keeping with our Green School ethos, we ask that donations include GENTLY used coats (with no rips, stains, or broken zippers), or new coats. Thank you!

Volunteers Needed

The PTA needs a variety of volunteers in both leadership and support roles. Please take a look at our volunteer page to see a full list of available jobs and choose a task that fits your skills. Help us pull off the many amazing events and programs we have planned for this school year!

Just a reminder, in order to volunteer in the school building, parents or guardians must fill out a volunteer application every two years, and the required training is valid for three years.

Save the Date: Discovery Auction is 2/24!

Save the date for the Discovery annual auction on February 24, 2024 from 7 pm to 12 am. We are embracing popular culture with a Barbie-themed evening, interpretations of this theme are welcome and encouraged.

Your presence and participation will play a significant role in building a brighter future for our children's education through supporting the PTA and the important programs it funds.

Let's come together, embrace the spirit of Barbie, and empower our school community!
