Update Your PTA Account to get all the Access For the first time, Discovery’s PTA is allowing ALL parents to access the online family directory (no paid PTA membership required). Need to track down a friend for a playdate or birthday party invite? You can likely find their information in the directory. BUT, you must have a current PTA account. To do that, start here: https://discoverypta.membershiptoolkit.com/home If you had an account last year, you MUST update your account this year. All of last year’s accounts that have not been updated are inactive. If you know anyone who is not receiving the PTA emails - and could use all of this valuable information! - please forward this to them so they can update their accounts as well. Finally, you MUST create/update your account via the PTA website on a computer browser. It can not be done on your phone browser or in the app. Once you have updated your account via a computer, you should have access to everything else via the app (now including our full PTA website). If you are still running into problems, please email secretary@discoverypta.com.
Next PTA Meeting is Wednesday, 11/13
The second PTA meeting of the school year (and the last one of the calendar year) is on Wednesday, November 13, from 7-8 pm in the Dining Commons! If you were at the last one, you know it will be a good time with fun giveaways and music. Additionally, we have several important topics to discuss including the proposed changes to school boundaries. Babysitting will be provided, and those without children should plan to join us for more socialization at Taqueria Poblano immediately following the meeting! If you can't make it, the meeting will be available via live stream on our website, but you don't get free stuff unless you show up in person!
No Frills Fundraiser is Live!
 No baking. No cleaning. No selling. Our easiest fundraiser ever created is underway! Our main goal this year is for 100% family participation. We are currently at 15% - can you help us meet our goal? The average family donation was $125 last year, but we appreciate donations of any amount.
100% of your contribution goes to making Discovery the best it can be for all our students. So if you want to support events like PumpkinFest and Bingo Night and everything else we do together to create an awesome Discovery community, please make your donation today.
Last Chance: Claim Lost and Found Items by Nov 8Is your child missing a water bottle/sweatshirt/glove/etc? Have you checked the Discovery Lost and Found? Lost and Found is located in the hallway across from the entrance to the library. The rack is getting full and unclaimed items will be donated to those in need on November 8th, so please take the time to stop by and take home anything that belongs to your family. Thank you!
Discovery Spirit Wear Shop is Now Open!  Discovery spirit wear orders will be taken from now until November 17th ONLY.
Over 30 items to explore for kids, women and men starting at just $8. New items and previous Under Armour favorites all ready before the Holidays. Some items are only being sold in limited quantities so order early for the best selection. Order online and once available (early to mid-December), your items will be delivered directly to your home or classroom just in time for the holidays!! Explore and order all your spirit wear! Principal Coffee on Cyber Safety Rescheduled for Nov 15 Please join us in the Blue Sky Studio at 9:15 am on Friday November 1st. Mr. Reeves, Discovery Technology Coach, will share a wealth of information on cyber safety. What is a chat room? How do you know who is in it? Learn what what your child is able to access and how you can monitor his or her actions. We will share curriculum we use at Discovery to teach cyber safety, review popular online games, and answer all your questions.
Discovery Game Night is Nov 21  Oh the places you'll go! Come join us November 21st for a family night filled with fun for all ages. There will be a variety of board games so you are sure to find one you enjoy! Play the free raffle to win a GREAT gift basket filled with games!

School Picture Make Up Day is Nov 21 School photos taken on Oct 17th should be going home in Friday Folders this week.
The following people should have their picture taken on Make Up Day, Tuesday, 11/21 from 9 am - noon. 1. Students who did NOT have their picture taken on Oct 17th. If your child was absent or is new to the school, you should have their picture taken for the yearbook. If you wish to order pictures, you may use your original order form OR pick up an extra order form in the front office. PLEASE bring it, complete with payment, to the photographer on Nov 21st or order online using the instructions on the order form.
2. Students who need a retake because their first picture was not satisfactory. These students do NOT need a new order form. Students MUST return the entire old portrait package to the photographer on makeup day in order to receive a new one. If you purchased a class photo, you may keep that. Class photos will not be retaken.
If you did not turn in your order form on time, or you did not originally purchase a portrait package, you should have received a "proof" of your child's photo in your packet. Your child does NOT need to have their picture taken on Make Up Day unless you are not happy with the first photo. Simply visit http://vosphoto.com/discovery to order your pictures online, at your convenience. You may need to use your student’s APS ID # (lunch number) as the user id. Discovery Food Bus Looking for a short-term, meaningful service experience for your family this holiday season? The Discovery Food Bus needs you! Volunteers are needed Friday afternoons (3:45 – 4:30 PM) to pack up and deliver food to Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC). A BIG THANK YOU to all of our volunteers this month! Our students have donated OVER 600 POUNDS of unwanted lunch items to AFAC this fall! This is a great family service project! The time commitment is minimal - the impact on our community is huge. What better way to celebrate the end of the school week than by helping our neighbors? Sign up here! AFAC has other ways you can get involved: The annual ‘Scouting for Food’ drive is this Saturday! Scouting for Food is the largest single-day food drive for AFAC. The hope is to collect 60,000 pounds of food this year. Please consider donating a bag of food this weekend. 2020 Elementary School Boundary Online Questionnaire In Fall 2020, APS will develop new boundaries for elementary schools that will take effect in the 2021-22 school year. APS has posted a survey for families to provide feedback on the boundary process through November 24 at https://www.apsva.us/engage/planning-for-2020-elementary-school-boundary-process/. Please note that although the boundary process will be focused on the two new schools that are opening, this will essentially be a County-wide boundary review and all students who attend neighborhood schools (like Discovery) could potentially be affected. Please take a moment to review the information on the APS site and complete the survey. |
