Share the Love Co-Chairs: Urgent Need

We have an urgent need for co-chairs to coordinate our annual Community Service Share the Love day, which helps us take the love surrounding Valentine's Day and share it with our community partners like Homestretch (an organization in Falls Church supporting families in need of housing), AWLA (Animal Welfare League of Arlington), and more.

The co-chairs will work with these organizations to identify time-limited projects that could be completed by volunteers offsite. Duties include contacting and making arrangements with area nonprofits, setting up activities, staffing the day of service, and delivering any finished projects to the nonprofits following the service day.

If we can't find co-chairs, we will have to cancel this fun and meaningful activity. Please consider getting involved and volunteering for this role! Previous Share the Love events have taken place at Discovery on a weekend near Valentine's Day.  This day of service is a great time for families in our Discovery community to come together to give back.

If you are interested in coordinating this year's Share the Love, please contact Elaine Broughan at volunteer@discoverypta.org

Elementary School Boundary Update and Webinar

Interim Arlington Public Schools Superintendent Cintia Johnson has forwarded her elementary schools planning recommendation to the School Board.  This proposal relocates the immersion program at Key Elementary to the current Arlington Traditional School (ATS) site and ATS to the current McKinley Elementary site.

There will be a public hearing at the January 30th School Board meeting, and the Board will vote on the issue at its meeting on February 6th.  APS staff will host a webinar this Friday, January 24th at 12:30 pm to discuss the process and address community feedback.

Further information on the webinar is available at https://www.apsva.us/engage/planning-for-2020-elementary-school-boundary-process/community-webinar-on-on-elementary-planning/?utm_source=APS%20Plans%202021%20Webinar&utm_campaign=f5jan17

2020 Your Voice Matters Survey

Families should have received a link to the survey the 2020 Your Voice Matters survey in mid-January.  This survey is conducted every two years by APS and the Arlington Partnership for Children, Youth, and Families (APCYF). The survey will be administered Jan. 13 through Feb. 28 to APS families, students in grades 4-12, staff and teachers to gain insight on topics such as school and community climate, well-being, and engagement.

Parent feedback is a really critical part of the process so if you have time, please respond to the survey before February 28.  For more information, including how to get a link to the survey if you didn’t receive it, please go to https://www.apsva.us/engage/your-voice-matters-survey-2020/

New APS Superintendent Search

The School Board is conducting a nationwide search for a new superintendent who can build on the division’s positive culture of learning and promote excellence and equity for all students. In December 2019, the School Board selected an executive search firm specializing in the recruitment of superintendents, to assist with the national search.

APS has devised a community survey to solicit feedback on what qualities parents would like to see in a new superintendent.  A link to the survey is available at https://www.apsva.us/engage/search-for-new-aps-superintendent/.
