DJ Dance Party is TOMORROW, Jan 10

Kick off 2020 with the 5th annual Discovery Family DJ Dance Party, TOMORROW Friday, January 10th from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm in the gym. This is an exciting event with a professional, fun, kid friendly DJ where kids (and some pretty awesome parents) show off their dance moves. Admission is free for Discovery students and their families!

All students should bring a (labeled) water bottle and a white or neon t-shirt (to decorate).Only sneakers allowed (to keep that gym floor looking good!) and no food inside the gym. Every child must be supervised by an adult.

We need some adult volunteers to help with a couple of tasks to make the event a success! Please take a look and sign up for a slot to help as a chaperone or to help with t-shirt decorating. Sign up here.

Baroody Camp Available for Early Release on Jan 15

Did you know next Wednesday, January 15th, is an Early Release day? Baroody will be offering a camp that afternoon if you are in need of childcare.
Sign up online! Registration closes at midnight the day of the camp.

Thank You for your Generosity

Our winter coat drive was a huge success, yielding the following for Clothesline:

  • 58 new, or slightly used winter coats
  • 9 hats
  • 4 pairs of gloves/mittens
  • 3 pairs of snow pants
  • 1 pair of glittery, purple ear muffs
  • ...and two big donation bags of various non-wintery articles of clothing that made their way into bins as well.

Our gift card drive was a big success too! Thank you all for your generosity. The Discovery community is the best!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Community Service Opportunities

There's no school on Monday, January 20th in recognition of MLK day! If you're looking for something to do with the family, consider the many volunteer opportunities available through Arlington County, including a fun scavenger hunt for Doorways and Bridges to Independence, cleanup of Four Mile Run Stream, and making Valentine's cards for Offender Aid and Restoration (OAR). See more information and sign up here

Additionally, the Animal Welfare League of Arlington has a Paws to Read program where children can read and provide companionship to cats and small rescue animals. Children can bring their own books or choose from a small selection at AWLA. Time slots are available from 12-5pm on MLK Day and throughout the rest of the week. Please note that AWLA requires a 1:1 parent:child ratio for the reading program. Sign up here.

Seeking Community Service Co-Chairs

Seeking co-chairs to coordinate our annual Community Service Share the Love day, which helps us take the love surrounding Valentine's Day and share it with our community partners like Homestretch (an organization in Falls Church supporting families in need of housing), AWLA (Animal Welfare League of Arlington), and more. Coordinators will work with these organizations to identify time-limited projects that could be completed by volunteers offsite. Duties of the coordinators include contacting and making arrangements with area nonprofits, setting up activities, staffing the day of service, and delivering any finished projects to the nonprofits following the service day. Previous Share the Love events have taken place at Discovery on a weekend near Valentine's Day.  This day of service is a great time for families in our Discovery community to come together to give back. If you are interested in coordinating this year's Share the Love, please contact Elaine Broughan at volunteer@discoverypta.org

Planning for PumpkinFest 2020!

We have the date for next year's PumpkinFest! Mark your calendars: October 25, 2020!  What we don't have is a chair (or co-chairs). This is a HUGE problem. If we don't have a chair lined up soon, we are at risk of having to cancel the biggest fall event the PTA hosts for our students and community. No one wants that to happen! If you are interested, please contact Adam Simkin ASAP at president@discoverypta.com
