Discovery's Poet Laureate Visits!

Discovery’s resident poet laureate, Joseph Green, recently spent time working with our third and fourth grade classes, curating an open mic poetry slam with students to showcase their original written compositions and accompanying artwork. I had the pleasure of watching Mr. Green work with the kids and I was inspired. I could hear the passion in his voice and students responded in kind when sharing their original poetry compositions and accompanying artwork. In this day and age, when music and arts are disappearing in schools at an alarming rate, with my whole heart, I am thankful to all the parents who contribute to the PTA to allow us to make opportunities like this possible!

- Adam Simkin, PTA President

No baking. No cleaning. No selling. Our easiest fundraiser ever created is underway! Our main goal this year is for 100% family participation - can you help us meet our goal? The average family donation was $125 last year, but we appreciate donations of any amount.

100% of your contribution goes to making Discovery the best it can be for all our students. So if you want to support events like PumpkinFest and Bingo Night and everything else we do together to create an awesome Discovery community, please make your donation today

 Community Service Opportunities

Clothesline Coat Drive - Now through Dec 13
It sure got cold fast this year! As you're cleaning out the closets, please consider donating children's coats, hats, and gloves in good, clean condition to Clothesline. There are two collections boxes at Discovery, one inside the front door and one by the side door near the slide. Please send in your coats before the coat drive ends on December 13th.

Gift Card Drive - Dec 2 through 20
This holiday season, please consider purchasing a few gift cards in $20 increments for our gift card drive. Cards to local grocery stores, gas stations, etc. will help make the holidays easier for Discovery families in need. Drop off the cards in the front office anytime before December 20th.

2020 Elementary School Boundary Online Questionnaire

In Fall 2020, APS will develop new boundaries for elementary schools that will take effect in the 2021-22 school year.  APS has posted a survey for families to provide feedback on the boundary process. The survey will close after November 24 so please take the time to weigh in before then at  https://www.apsva.us/engage/planning-for-2020-elementary-school-boundary-process/.

Please note that although the boundary process will be focused on the two new schools that are opening, this will essentially be a County-wide boundary review and all students who attend neighborhood schools (like Discovery) could potentially be affected.  Please take a moment to review the information on the APS site and complete the survey before this Sunday, November 24.

To submit community news for publication in the Discovery PTA newsletter, please email a short blurb to newsletter@discoverypta.org.
