World Heritage Dinner Celebration is Tomorrow

Discovery will end the week with a World Heritage Dinner Celebration on Friday, February 7, 2025, from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.

It's not too late to sign up here to bring a dish, share an activity or performance.  Friendly reminder this is a nut free event. We look forward to seeing you there and celebrating a host of cultures within our Discovery community!

Discovery Family in Need

One of our Discovery Explorers has been hospitalized, and will likely remain there for quite some time. The family is in need of Uber gift cards and Giant Food gift cards as they care for their child.

If you'd like to help support them, please drop off gift cards in the Discovery front office. Questions can be driected to Dr. Healy.

Get all the details

Next PTA Meeting is Feb 11th

The February PTA meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 11th right after the Share the Love event and will feature guest speaker Ivan Lopez, from the APS Dept. of School Climate & Culture

Join us on Saturday, March 8, 2025, from 7pm to 12am at Knights of Columbus! Celebrate our wonderful Discovery community with our biggest fundraiser and adult social of the year. We need your help to make this event a success!

Family/personal donations are easy!  Families love these donations and some examples include: sports game tickets; vacation home use; hosting any type of parent or kid or family party including a backyard party, movie night, pool party, or a poker tournament or professional services and more!

Parent & Grandparents Patron Sponsorships! We are excited to roll out a brand-new sponsorship for Discovery Families! Show your support and become a Parent or Grandparent Patron and be recognized on the “2025 Discovery Hall of Fame.”

Teachers and Staff Donations!  These are highly sought after! Parents love to bid on these experiences for the kids to spend extra special time with our beloved teachers and staff! Activities could include an after school pizza/popsicle/ice cream mini party, gardening, reading, brain games...think anything fun/special with you at the school or perhaps at a local playground etc.

Why Donate? This fundraiser provides over half of the PTA’s budget, which is used to fund activities and events like author visits, field trip transportation, academic enrichment like STEM resources, our many community building school events, the hydroponic garden, and so much more...your contribution will have an immediate impact!

Ticket sales are here!  Early Bird Tickets are now $75 each until February 8th and then $100 after and include open bar, heavy appetizers, live DJ, a photo booth and the celebrated late-night taco bell. (Teachers and staff plus 1 guest are FREE.)

To Dress Up or Not? This year's theme is "Hollywood Night: Lights, Camera, Auction". Do you have a favorite Hollywood star, singer, favorite movie character? Maybe old Hollywood glam is more your vibe. Or dress with a group of friends and make it an epic experience. Choose any decade - so many options! Costumes are encouraged but not required, come as you are!

Sign up to Volunteer! Contact Auction Co-Chairs Tyra Wittenborn (tyra.wittenborn@yahoo.com) or Mary Ann Laconte (maryann.voigt@gmail.com) to volunteer for the event planning, fundraising, or day-of set up!

Ongoing Opportunities
Help Discovery Win a Bench from Trex!

Beginning in March, Explorers, families, and staff will collect and weigh stretchy plastic to recycle through Trex’s Recycling Challenge program. Trex is most commonly known for their decking material made with recycled plastic. The program challenges us to recycle 1,000 pounds of plastic in a 1-year timeframe (March 2025-February 2026). Students will collect and weigh the donations each week but we need family help to get the donations to a collection site.

Sign-Up to help!

What is “stretchy plastic”? See the graphic below but the biggest items you likely have are plastic Amazon mailers, bubble wrap, air packs from packages, and grocery bags. Please note plastic must be dry and clean of food residue. Learn more about what can be recycled with Trex and how they recycle it.

Donation bins will be placed at the front entrance in March but we encourage you to begin saving the plastic now! (You can have your student bring it to Mrs. Hutto’s room before our official start to add to her collection).

Get Your Discovery Gear!

We have a new vendor this year. You can place an order anytime and they will ship directly to your home. If there are items you'd like to see added to the store, please reach out to Sarah Lantz at schoolprograms@discoverypta.org

Place your orders at https://teamlocker.squadlocker.com/#/lockers/discovery-elementary-2170217

Sign Up for the Discovery Food Bus!

Discovery students donate over 2,800 pounds of food to AFAC (Arlington Food Assistance Program) through the Discovery Food Bus Program.

We need volunteers (parents and kids!) to drive food donations to AFAC on Fridays anytime between 2-4 PM! It’s quick, easy and makes a big impact! Sign up here!

Volunteers Needed!

There are so many ways to get involved!

We need volunteers to help with:

Discovery's Garden PATCH (Parent And Teacher Committee on Horticulture)

Join Discovery parents and teachers to tend to our fantastic garden spaces at your convenience. We have opportunities to help as much or as limited as you like.

Sign up HERE, and thank you very much for your interest! We will follow up once you complete the sign up.

If you'd like to reach us directly, our lead contact is Haley Anderson (PK3 and K parent) at anderson.haley.r@gmail.com
