PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EVENT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO MONDAY, JANUARY 28TH DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER.
What is MLK Day all about? And why do we have off? Well, MLK Day is actually considered a "day on, not a day off"! The Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday is designated as a day of service & calls for Americans from all walks of life to come together and work towards solving some of our nations most pressing problems, hopefully moving us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community." There are any number of ways that people can & do give back to the community on this day & throughout the year.
We would like to invite you & yours to join us for our 3rd annual MLK Day of Service where our efforts will benefit the below organizations. You & your Explorers can help by:
Providing food for neighbors in need through donations of Unopened Non-Perishable Pantry items for the Arlington Food Assistance Center.
Donating New & Gently used Household & Adult Clothing items (Boots, Sneakers, NEW Socks, Winter-wear, New Underwear, Blankets, New Bras & Backpacks) will bring warmth, comfort & integrity to some of Arlington's most vulnerable population via the Arlington Street People's Assistance Center.
With your help & that of the amazing folks at Borromeo Housing, much needed items like Diapers, Wipes and New & Gently Used Clothing will help ensure that motherhood is less of a burden & more of the joy it should be for young single mothers in our community.
Donation items include:
- Unopened Non-Perishable Food Items (canned goods, boxed cereal, boxes of pasta, bags of rice, etc.)
- Gently Used Women's Clothing (including maternity)
- Gently Used Men's Clothing
- Gently Used Baby and Children's Clothing
- NEW socks and underwear for men, women and children
- New and gently used blankets
- New backpacks
- Gently Used Toys, Puzzles and Games
- Adult Toiletries
- Diapers and Wipes
Donations can be dropped in the MLK Day box found in the main lobby or brought to the Dining Commons on the day of.
We would encourage you to look into these local organizations and if their visions resonate with you, you'll find that there are many ways that you can help throughout the year! Each organization also has a comprehensive list of their most needed items posted on their websites.
Our day will include the collection, sorting & boxing of donated items including: Diapers, Wipes, New & Gently used Clothing (infant, children, maternity & adult), Toys, Books, Games & Puzzles, Baby Gear, Adult Toiletries, Household Items & Non-Perishable Pantry Items.
If your family is anything like mine, this time of year finds us cleaning out closets & sorting through toys to make room for the new & pass along the old. Please consider donating items that your family may no longer need but still have life for others to enjoy! We'd love for you to bring them down & help sort through our donations for these organizations! Representatives from each organization will be on hand to provide information about what they do & how you can help!
