Fifth Grade Promotion

 


 

We can't believe that the school year is almost half-over and that it is time to start thinking about 5th grade promotion.  We have formed a great committee to plan the several activities surrounding promotion and are looking forward to celebrating our 5th graders together as the school year comes to an end.

Below are the activities surrounding 5th grade promotion: 

 

  • Promotion Ceremony: The promotion ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, June 19th from 4:30 to 5:30 in the Discovery Gym (children will be asked to arrive 15 minutes early at 4:15 pm. We know that the turnaround could be difficult for some bus riders, so we will start as close to 4:30 as possible, but no later than 4:45 pm). The ceremony lasts approximately 1 hour. We are expecting families to take their 5th graders off campus to get dinner and come back at 7:00pm for the Celebration. 

 

  • Celebration: The celebration will be held at 7 pm on Wednesday, June 19th from 7 to 8:30 pm. The celebration will be in the Discovery Dining Commons/covered veranda/small turf area off of veranda. At the celebration, we will have a DJ in the Dining Commons, and another activity (some sort of inflatable course/game) on the turf outside the Dining Commons. We will need 5th grade parents to chaperone this event. Stay tuned for a Sign Up Genius. 

 

  • Field Trip/Pool Party: The fifth grade celebratory field trip is scheduled for Thursday, June 20th from 9:30 to 2:30  at Upton Hill Regional Park: https://www.novaparks.com/parks/upton-hill-regional-park Once we get closer to the date, we will add a link to a Sign-Up Genius for chaperones. We will need lots of drivers and chaperones, as school buses are no longer available this late in the school year.

 

  • Community Service Project: Kristen Douglas will be chairing the 5th Grade's community service project. Here is a note from Kristen:

    Sam and I have volunteered to head up the 5th grade service project this year. Luckily, we are also able to work in parallel with Mrs. Standley and Ms. Olmsted as they are also working on this for a continuing education project. 
     
    We have decided to clean up and make some much needed updates to the outdoor lab/learning space. Sam and I have walked the area many times and have a comprehensive list of ideas. We (parents and of course our 5th grade students!) will be cleaning the area, making the pathway more secure, upgrading the benches and if we have enough time, we will add a standing work bench area for outdoor projects. All of this depends on how many hands we can get to help make this project a success. There will be plenty of projects for the 5th graders to do and opportunities to learn how to use many tools. 
     
    In the meantime, please save the date for June 8, 2019 8:00am to 4:00pm . It will be much warmer by that point so we plan on starting at 8 am and having shifts so all can participate and work this into our very busy weekend schedules. Once we finish up on June 8th, Mrs. Standley and Ms. Olmsted will review the progress and decide what they will have their classes do for the outdoor space in the last few weeks of school.   • Class Gift: Sheri LaBonte will be oranizing the 5th grade class gift this year. If you have any ideas or would like to be involved, please contact Sheri at sheri.labonte@outlook.com

 

  • Class T-shirt: Each student will be given a class t-shirt with all the kids names or signatures on it. Please fill out this form to order your class shirt. 


  • Class Photo: THE CLASS PHOTO WILL BE TAKEN ON MARCH 12th. We are hoping to have the 5th grade class t-shirts before then so that the kids can wear them in the photo (but only if they want to!).

 

  • Baby Picture Display: Julie Verry & Ashley Leonard have created a Google Photos Album to add your kiddo(s) baby picture. Click here for the link to the baby pictures upload site. The instructions are all there.

     

  • Slideshow: This will be a slideshow set to music and will be of the baby pictures, the current yearbook pictures, and also some photos of activities that 5th graders did over the course of the year; the musical, the Outdoor Lab, etc. It will run throughout the school on the TV’s the last week of school. Katherine Leon will be creating the slideshow.     Many of these activities cost money, and while the PTA will be helping to cover the cost of the field trip/pool party, we are asking that each family contribute $30 towards 5th grade promotion activities payable through the PTA website (link) or by check made payable to “Discovery PTA” and having your 5th grader give this check to their teacher/drop off the check in the main office. Please pay this by April 1, 2019.
