Halloween Candy Donation

Looking for a place to donate your unwanted leftover Halloween candy? Look no further--just bring your candy to Discovery anytime from November 1st-7th, and we'll take care of delivering it to Mattie Miracle 8th Annual Candy Drive. Candy can be deposited in the bins which will be located just inside the entrances at Discovery. Mattie Miracle collects this candy and donates it to six hospitals and 11 non-profit organizations that assist children with cancer and others in need.  Specifically at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (Washington, DC) and Children's Hospital at Sinai (Baltimore, MD), the candy helps to stock a free snack/item cart that is offered to families caring for children in the hospital.

Winter Gift Card Drive

As winter break approaches, the Discovery PTA is collecting gift cards of all kinds and amounts to share with families in our community and foster care families who are in need of a little extra love and support this season. So, if you are out shopping for the holidays, please consider picking up an extra gift card for gas, groceries, movies, or other items and drop them off in the designated box in the front office by December 19. The gift cards will be donated through the Arlington Public Assistance's Secret Santa. Gifts cards should not exceed $25 each, but you can submit as many as you like. https://publicassistance.arlingtonva.us/secret-santa/

MLK Day of Service: Borromeo House Toy and Clothing Drive

The community service committee is once again collecting gently used clothing, toys and books to be donated as part of the MLK Day of Service. This time of year, many families in our community are reflecting on their blessings and looking for ways to give back to our local community. The community service committee will hold a day of service on January 15th, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Volunteers are needed to help sort and package donations that day.

Last year, over 100 children and their parents joined in this day of service. This year, we hope to have an even bigger turnout with the addition of A-SPAN. A member from A-SPAN will be joining us to speak about what the organization does and to inform our children and parents on ways to incorporate service in our community. Items to be donated should be placed in the box labelled “Borromeo House Donations” located in the front hallway across from the windows during the month of January.

Food Bus

Discovery students are learning how to give back to our community and reduce waste in their lunch by collecting items that have not been eaten and would normally be thrown out.  We need parent volunteers to deliver these food items to Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC).
