APS Budget Shortfall: CALL TO ACTION

Under the current Arlington County budget scheme, funding for Arlington Public Schools is determined by a County "revenue share" formula which does not take into account APS' actual needs.  As a result, we are anticipating funding shortfalls in APS' budget for this coming year and future years.  These shortfalls pose serious potential consequences to the high quality of Arlington public schools including larger class sizes, reduced funding for educations programs, and additional limitations on teacher pay.

The CCPTA recently submitted a resolution to the County Board encouraging it to fund APS above its County revenue share.   As part of this effort, we will be sending out notices encouraging interested PTA members to attend upcoming County Board budget meetings to show their support for APS.

Call to Action: please show your support for this effort by filling out the Arlington Capital Improvements Plan survey below and expressing your support for Arlington schools:

How is the PTA using with the money you have donated this year?

I’m happy to report that extra funds that came in through the No Frills, PumpkinFest, Book Fair, etc have enabled the PTA to increase funding to a few key areas to support our students and teachers.

  1. Additional $1,000 to 5th grade promotion for a total of $2,000 from the PTA
  2. Additional $2,620 to 4th grade Jamestown field trip to fully cover the costs of students and teachers (parents/chaperones will still need to pay about $25 each - same as last year). These funds come from a portion of the PumpkinFest surplus ($1,500), savings from Parent Math Academy and Parent Reading Academy ($920), and savings from having one Bingo Night instead of two ($200). The total cost of this field trip is $6,346; this additional funding would mean the PTA is funding a total of $5,450 and the remaining $925 would be paid by 37 chaperones at $25 each.
  3. $1484 for two of our PE teachers to attend the Society of Health and Physical Educators conference in Nashville, TN in March.
  4. $2,760 in registration fees for 8 teachers, coaches, admin to attend the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics conference in Washington, D.C. in April.

These were all approved at the PTA meeting on Tuesday.  For more details on these agenda items and the budget, please check the PTA Meetings website

Discovery Gives Back

The Discovery Community has found three ways to give back to our community and our planet.

Gift Card Donations

Eco-Action Transportation Initiative

MLK Day of Service: BORROMEO HOUSE TOY AND CLOTHING DRIVE

Gift Cards for the Holidays

WINTER GIFT CARD DRIVE--
As winter break approaches, the Discovery PTA is collecting gift cards of all kinds and amounts to share with families in our community and foster care families who are in need of a little extra love and support this season.

So, if you are out shopping for the holidays, please consider picking up an extra gift card for gas, groceries, movies, or other items and drop them off in the designated box in the front office by December 15.

The gift cards will be donated through the Arlington Public Assistance's Secret Santa. Gifts cards should not exceed $25 each, but you can submit as many as you like.

Transportation Initiative

The Eco-Action Team and Sustainability Liaisons are working towards reaching the platinum level of the Transportation Initiative this year through the Arlington Transportation Partners as our Discovery Sustainability goal. Green Leaders have been handing out stickers to students who bike/scooter to school, so that it makes it easier for patrols to identify and collect transportation data for our data panel. Also, green leaders are now counting staff cars to measure how many staff members are driving to school each day.

What we need to work on:

  • Create a plan with the PTA to reduce parent drop-off/pick ups by 20%
  • Achieve 20% reduction in parent drop offs/pickups (that is 14 families)
  • Achieve the APS Go! goal of 30% students walking and biking (Fall 2016 APS Go! survey showed parents reported 30%, students self-reported 25%)
  • Show a 5% annual increase in students walking or biking (in addition to or instead of the above goal) (that is roughly 9 students)

How can parents help the Transportation Initiative for our Discovery community?

  • Form Carpools (we need to increase by 1)
  • Form Walking Pools
  • Form Bike Pools (we need to increase by 9 bikers)
Please contact your Sustainability Liaisons, Kathleen Krupa and Maria Burke, if you are interested in creating a biking or walking pool to school.

MLK Day of Service: BORROMEO HOUSE TOY AND CLOTHING DRIVE

The community service committee is once again collecting gently used clothing, toys and books to be donated as part of the MLK Day of Service.

This time of year, many families in our community are reflecting on their blessings and looking for ways to give back to our local community. The community service committee will hold a day of service on January 15th, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Volunteers are needed to help sort and package donations that day.

Last year, over 100 children and their parents joined in this day of service. This year, we hope to have an even bigger turnout with the addition of A-SPAN. A member from A-SPAN will be joining us to speak about what the organization does and to inform our children and parents on ways to incorporate service in our community.

Items to be donated should be placed in the box labelled “Borromeo House Donations” located in the front hallway across from the windows.

Trial Traffic Pattern

There have been ongoing concerns with the traffic backup on 36th Street during arrival and dismissal. For this reason, Discovery is piloting a new trial traffic pattern beginning Monday, December 11th.

On Monday morning, cars will be able turn left or RIGHT when exiting the Discovery parking lot at arrival and dismissal. We ask all drivers to use caution, as westbound cars will be turning left into Discovery’s parking lot. This trial will occur for the two weeks before the winter break, December 11-21. Please be aware that 36th Street and Kensington is a four way stop.

Safety is the number one priority.

  • Drivers use slow speeds on 36th Street and when in the Discovery parking lot.
  • Walkers should walk around the parking lot near the turf field to avoid crossing both the entrance and exit of Discovery’s parking lot.
  • Dog walkers are encouraged to walk on the (south side) of 36th Street and cross at the crosswalk at Jefferson St. near Discovery’s cement stairs. Thank you for keeping our four-legged friends off school property.

Arlington County police will be on site to ensure safety. APS staff will monitor the traffic during this trial period. Again, we ask for your cooperation and patience during drop-off and pick-up to ensure community safety.  Parents and the neighborhood will be updated with results before the return to school on January 2.
