MLK Day of Service: Borromeo House Toy and Clothing Drive
The community service committee is once again collecting gently used clothing, toys and books to be donated as part of the MLK Day of Service. This time of year, many families in our community are reflecting on their blessings and looking for ways to give back to our local community. The community service committee will hold a day of service on January 21st, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Dining Commons at Discovery Elementary School. Volunteers are needed to help sort and package donations that day. If you cannot help sort and deliver, we would still love your items, so if you are Kondo-ing this season like so many of us are, please consider delivering your items to Discovery to drop off during School Hours in the bins marked inside the entrance of the school OR drop them off on the 21st between 11 a.m. and NOON. For more details and questions, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Last year, over 100 children and their parents joined in this day of service. This year, we hope to have an even bigger turnout with the addition of A-SPAN. A member from A-SPAN will be joining us to speak about what the organization does and to inform our children and parents on ways to incorporate service in our community. Items to be donated should be placed in the box labelled “Borromeo House Donations” located in the front hallway across from the windows during the month of January.
Discovery students are learning how to give back to our community and reduce waste in their lunch by collecting items that have not been eaten and would normally be thrown out. We need parent volunteers to deliver these food items to Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC).
Mattie Miracle Candy Donation
Thanks to everyone who fed the candy monsters at Discovery! We donated roughly 243.6 lbs. of candy to Mattie Miracle Cancer Foundation, an Arlington-based nonprofit that ensures children fighting cancer and their families have a psychosocial voice and that those needs are addressed. Mattie Miracle collected and distributed over 12,000 lbs. of candy to stock free snack and toiletry carts at area hospitals like Sinai, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, and other pediatric cancer treatment facilities. Keep an eye out for our toiletry drive for Mattie Miracle in March.
Gift Cards for the Holidays
As winter break approaches, the Discovery PTA is collecting gift cards of all kinds and amounts to share with families in our community and foster care families who are in need of a little extra love and support this season.
So, if you are out shopping for the holidays, please consider picking up an extra gift card for gas, groceries, movies, or other items and drop them off in the designated box in the front office by December 21.
The gift cards will be donated through the Arlington Public Assistance's Secret Santa. Gifts cards should not exceed $25 each, but you can submit as many as you like. https://publicassistance.arlingtonva.us/secret-santa/
