DISCOVERY PTA would like to invite you & yours to a FUN AFTERNOON of SERVICE!
SUN. FEBRUARY 11, 2018
Discovery Dining Commons
Show Discovery C.A.R.E.S. & let's SHARE the LOVE!
There will be activities for all age groups to participate in to show their support for those in need in our community. Our efforts this day will benefit two different groups! Both the Arlington's Street People's Assistance Network clients as well as the young patients and their families of the INOVA Fairfax Children's Hospital will be directly touched by the time and energy you & your children put in. Let's teach our kids what it's like to reach out and touch the lives of those who truly need a helping hand! Here is how your Explorer can get involved:
- We invite you and your 3rd-5th graders to join us in prepping & bagging meals for A-SPAN's Homeless Bagged Meal Program!
- We invite you and your Pre-K-2nd graders to join us in creating & decorating Valentine cards to be delivered to sick children at INOVA Fairfax's children's ward & their families.
Being grateful for our health and that of the ones we love is so important, let's help our kids to relate to some kids who are not as fortunate and shed a little light on their day. (Along with our Valentines, we will also be crafting sweet notes of encouragement to go along with our bagged meals for A-SPAN!)
If you plan to attend, kindly follow the link below to sign your child(ren) up for a team!
We are looking for volunteers for both hands on work the day of our event as well as volunteers to sign up to contribute supplies for our Valentine card making and purchasing items from our shopping list. In addition, if you have an older child in middle or high school who would be interested in helping to guide the younger kids in the crafting area, we would love to have them join us as well!
Please see the following link to sign up as a volunteer!
We had such a wonderful community response to our MLK Day of Service! BIG thanks to all who donated their time, hard work and items for those in need! All three of our charity partner's were extremely grateful for our efforts!
MLK Day of Service
Borromeo House Toy and Clothing Drive - Jan 15 (11AM-1PM)
The community service committee is once again collecting gently used clothing, toys and books to be donated as part of the MLK Day of Service.
This time of year, many families in our community are reflecting on their blessings and looking for ways to give back to our local community. The community service committee will hold a day of service on January 15th, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Volunteers are needed to help sort and package donations that day.
Last year, over 100 children and their parents joined in this day of service. This year, we hope to have an even bigger turnout with the addition of A-SPAN. A member from A-SPAN will be joining us to speak about what the organization does and to inform our children and parents on ways to incorporate service in our community.
Items to be donated should be placed in the box labelled “Borromeo House Donations” located in the front hallway across from the windows.
Discovery students are learning how to give back to our community and reduce waste in their lunch by collecting items that have not been eaten and would normally be thrown out. We need parent volunteers to deliver these food items to Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC).

Gift Cards for the Holidays
WINTER GIFT CARD DRIVE--
As winter break approaches, the Discovery PTA is collecting gift cards of all kinds and amounts to share with families in our community and foster care families who are in need of a little extra love and support this season.
So, if you are out shopping for the holidays, please consider picking up an extra gift card for gas, groceries, movies, or other items and drop them off in the designated box in the front office by December 21.
The gift cards will be donated through the Arlington Public Assistance's Secret Santa. Gifts cards should not exceed $25 each, but you can submit as many as you like.
